What does “tumescent” mean? What does it have to do with Mini Lipo?
This procedure is called “tumescent” which means “ to swell”. The physician injects or swells the fatty areas that are targeted for removal with a special solution, which makes the extraction easier. The physician then injects a very tiny straw-like tube that removes the fatty deposits. This technique is quite safe and has the added benefit of not requiring general anesthesia or heavy intravenous sedation.
Is the procedure painful?
Prior to the procedure, you will be provided with oral medication for relaxation and for any pain you may feel.
The tumescent solution injected into the fatty areas targeted for removal contains lidocaine. Lidocaine temporarily numbs the nerves in the fat and skin so you will not feel pain during the procedure. If there is any discomfort, it is quite minimal. This anesthetic effect lasts about 24 hours, thereby reducing discomfort after the procedure as well.
During the first few days after the procedure, you may experience soreness similar to muscle aches after strenuous exercise. This can be treated with over the counter pain medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
Is it safe?
Tumescent Mini Lipo/Body Sculpting is very safe. A major reason for its safety is that there is no need for general anesthesia or heavy intravenous sedation, which poses its own risks. Local anesthesia is used which means that the patient is awake during the procedure. The anesthetic used, lidocaine, is contained in the tumescent solution. The solution also contains epinephrine which constricts the blood vessels, thereby reducing bleeding to very small amounts as to be negligible. The instruments used are very fine, thereby not requiring incisions.
How much fat can be removed at one time?
The amount of fat that can be removed during this procedure is the same as in traditional liposuction: up to 4 liters.
What areas can be treated?
Almost any area that has excess fatty deposits can be successfully treated with this procedure. We have seen great success in the following areas: abdomen, waist,
inner thighs, outer thighs, hips, buttocks, “love handles”, “saddlebags”, and “bra fat”.
Are there any side effects?
There are side effects and risks for any procedure. The common side effects of Tumescent Mini Lipo/Body Sculpture are: bruising, swelling, temporary numbness, and inflammation. These usually subside in a few days to a week. The biggest side effect is that the fat deposits are gone!
Will it work for me?
The ideal patient for this procedure is someone who is in generally good health and good shape, but have localized, resistant areas of fatty deposits. Upon completion of a consultation, the clinician or physician will make the determination if the patient is a good candidate. Commonly, if the patient has realistic expectations regarding this treatment, they will be very satisfied with the results.
When will I see results?
Results can be seen immediately after the procedure, although the body will still be retaining much of the solution that was injected. In a day or two, more of the swelling will be gone and results will be even more apparent. Noticeable improvement, along with smoother, tighter skin, will be seen within 2 to 3 weeks, post-treatment. With continued care and treatment, results can continue to improve up to 12 weeks post-treatment.
Will the fat come back?
Once the fat is removed from the body, the cells do not grow back. However, it is unrealistic to think that all of the fat cells will be removed. If the patient follows a healthy lifestyle, it is unlikely that the fat will return, and the patient will continue to realize the goal of a beautifully sculpted body.
Is there any downtime?
The typical patient can resume their normal activities within 24 to 48 hours of the procedure. For example, it is common for a patient who has the treatment on a Saturday to return to work on Monday or Tuesday.
